1. Introduction
If introductions are scary for you, then it is exactly what you need to do frequently. Whoever you cross paths with in the company, introduce yourself and get to know the people around your new working environment.
On your first day, there will usually be someone who is responsible for showing you around, check with them on the list of people whom you should get to know. Remember to be respectful, start with professional introductions first then work your way up to finding friendly co-workers after.
Another thing to note is that first impressions matter so dress smart and clean, and carry yourself with confidence.
2. Know your schedule
As we all know, different companies have different cultures and working styles. It is good to confirm your schedule for your first day or first week with the manager who is in-charge of your orientation.
Let them know that you want to be prepared for what is to come for the rest of the day or the week and would appreciate it if they could inform you on what you should expect.
Do not assume that everyone will tell you what to do and where to go at any given time, take the initiative and don’t be afraid to ask questions or as for help when you need to.
3. Spot a friend
Every new environment can seem scary and foreign. It is like travelling to a foregin country, everything is new and exciting but daunting at the same time.
But when you travel with a friend, suddenly the scary things don’t make you as nervous anymore. That is exactly what you need in a new workplace!
Find your friend, spot a friendly face and introduce yourself! Identify your new work friends, strike up a conversation and find similar interests that will keep your conversations going! Also, ask them out to lunch and see if they can maybe help you navigate around your new environment better.
4. Punctuality
Actually, being punctual normally would be good, but we recommend getting to your first day about 15 to 30 minutes earlier than you are normally expected to.
If there are traffic or personal delays, it should not stress you out too much since you left half an hour earlier, and if there are no unexpected disasters, then you can take the time to get relaxed and grab coffee before getting in for work.
5. Ask questions
The person who learns and enables others to learn the most, is not the person who is the smartest in the room, it is the inquisitive person who is not afraid of asking questions because it allows them to learn as much as possible to be able to provide quality work and deliver results efficiently.
It is natural to want to appear capable and confident, but do not let that hold you back from asking questions that can help you in the long run.
Being capable is about being able to do your job well, if you do not know how to do something and yet you refuse to ask questions, that is about your ego and not your capabilities. Ask someone politely if they have a couple minutes to help clarify something for you is totally fine!
A short note for everyone nervous about their first day: Do not overthink it, be confident and poised, be inquisitive and friendly. You will do just fine.
