Steps to present your best qualities in an interview

During an interview, one very common thing you will be asked to do is to list your strengths and weaknesses.

Many people tend to stumble and get frazzled when trying to provide an adequate answer but fret not, follow these steps and you should be able to present your best qualities to the interviewers with confidence.

1)    Outlining Your Strengths

In your own free time, spend a few moments identifying what you think your best qualities are. Then, make another list of strengths a person will need to possess in the particular job position you are applying for. Most people have more strengths than the ones they list during an interview, so it is wise to cater the best qualities you list to what the job will require.

Doing this prior to the interview will help you be prepared and avoid the unnecessary fillers everyone has a habit of falling back on. The usual “uhm”, “and uhh”, even though you know it is best to not say it, you can’t seem to help it when you are searching for the right words in your head.

Already knowing what you want to say will help prevent that to a large extent.

2)    Apply Your Strengths

Paint the mental picture for them and describe how the strengths you have are a valuable asset to the company and why the person in this job position should have the strengths you already possess.

Explain to them how you are able to show up, put your best foot forward and utilize these strengths everyday at work. Share with them how your drive and enthusiasm for this job allows you to perform to your fullest potential.

For example, if the job position has constant tight deadlines, the person in this role should be efficient with their work without compromising the quality of the results.

3)

Back Up Your Claims!

A strong claim without some evidence provided still amounts to just fluff. After listing your strengths and painting a pretty picture of your addition to the company, it is time to solidify the idea that you are the perfect candidate with past experiences of you having displayed said strengths.

It does not have to be a work related story, but it needs to be experiences that show the interviewer how you were able to utilize your strengths in the past. This proves that you have done it before and that you can do it again.

4)    List your Weaknesses

One friendly advice for when you list your weaknesses, be prepared to tell the interviewer how you have been trying to overcome or improve on your shortcomings. It is good to be aware of your weaknesses, it is even better to let them know that you are doing something about it!

Afterall, lack of action is the true downfall.
